Flowers, Flowers and more Flowers
This week we have been working on our cut flowers part of our business. We had Jim (Neil's dad) tilling up rows on the front side of the property to prepare it for us to plant our flowers. Neil's brother Kyle started planting the flowers and Neil and I finished up in the dark. We ended up getting around 900 flowers in the ground! While today I am quite sore, the end product is going to be absolutely beautiful. We have a wide range of flowers including Daisies, Statice, Cosmos, Sweat Peas, Zinnias, Baby's Breath, Delphinium, Black Eyed Susan, Sunflowers, etc.
This week we planted 500 sweet potatoes. We are going to be working on getting our hydroponic system completed so we can start experimenting with all the cool season crops, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, etc. One system will be a float system in water and the other will be growing in just straight perlite. Also, we are currently converting an old office into a wash station. It will house the wash system and our 20 gallon salad spinner. And last but not least, we are constantly trying to keep up with our ever so favorite thing called weeds. It seems like you get somewhat caught up and you turn around and there they are again. I guess that is just part of the life of a vegetable farmer.
We have our first tomato set fruit in our tunnel! We are so excited to see progress and knowing that in a few weeks time the tunnel with be full of new fruit!
We are currently taking loose leaf lettuce, spinach, kale, radish, green onion, and head lettuce to the markets. Also, you can check out the product availability list and see what we have ready! Please visit us at the markets and get your fresh, local grown vegetables.
We hope you all of a wonderful and Blessed week!
