Just keep picking...that seems like that is our theme around the farm lately.  Between picking and weeding that is about all that has been going on.  Neil still continues to work on the hog house to greenhouse conversion and is constantly making changes and improvements.

We are still attending the Wednesday and Saturday markets.  I (Tashney) was able to attend the market last Saturday and help Neil.  It was quite an experience having so many customers to work with and great to put faces with the names.  Thank you all for making this a successful business.  We are so blessed to have wonderful customers that are interested in local grown food.

Have a wonderful and blessed weekend!

Hello,

We normally do not send out emails about what is going on around the farm since we just put a blog on our website.  But we feel like that we have had a lot of new things going on around the farm that is worth while to share with each of you.

Just last month we purchased a refrigerated truck to use for some of our products to get them cooled down faster so they stay fresh.  So far it has been a huge help in storing our sweet corn just after it is picked.

As many of you might know, we have converted a hog barn into a greenhouse.  This greenhouse is going to be used for experimenting with two different hydroponic systems.  We are going to be experimenting with the cool season crops.  Right now we are going to have lettuce and spinach.  One system is going to be grown in water as you are probably familiar with, and the other is going to be grown in perlite.   We are quite excited to find out the results of this experiment.  To help aid in this experiment, Neil has installed an evaporative cooling system in the greenhouse.  So far it is doing it's job quite well.  Also to go along with this greenhouse Neil has put on a shade cloth that was in three pieces each being 34'x48'.  Oh and not to mention he put it on all by himself!

Tashney and Addisyn worked in the tunnel last week starting seeds for the hydroponic system.  Needless to say Addi was covered head to toe in soil.  But they had a lot of fun and got the job done.

Our summer season has been very busy as you all know and very productive.  As a part in our business we are also doing cut flower and making arrangements each week to sell at the markets.  As of right now there does not seem to be a large demand for flowers, but we hope that it will pick up.

We hope that all of our CSA customers are pleased and satisfied with our products.  If anyone has any comments or suggestions, please feel free to contact us.  Also, if you would like to visit the farm please let us know and we would be happy to show you around.

Have a great and Blessed week!

We hope everyone is having a wonderful summer so far.  We have had not only a good start to the summer season, but a very busy one too!  We have been picking, planting, weeding, arranging flowers, picking and more picking!  It is quite hard to keep up with all the picking that has to be done.

We hope that all of our CSA customers are completely satisfied with all of the produce that you have been receiving.  If there are any suggestions or comments, they would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you again for all of your support.

We are currently attending the West Lafayette Farmers Market on Wednesdays from 3:30 to 6pm and the Lafayette Farmers Market on Saturdays from 7:30am to 12:30pm.  If you are in the area please come by our booth and visit.

This week we have been working on our cut flowers part of our business.  We had Jim (Neil's dad) tilling up rows on the front side of the property to prepare it for us to plant our flowers.  Neil's brother Kyle started planting the flowers and Neil and I finished up in the dark.  We ended up getting around 900 flowers in the ground!  While today I am quite sore, the end product is going to be absolutely beautiful.  We have a wide range of flowers including Daisies, Statice, Cosmos, Sweat Peas, Zinnias, Baby's Breath, Delphinium, Black Eyed Susan, Sunflowers, etc.

This week we planted 500 sweet potatoes.  We are going to be working on getting our hydroponic system completed so we can start experimenting with all the cool season crops, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, etc.  One system will be a float system in water and the other will be growing in just straight perlite.  Also, we are currently converting an old office into a wash station.  It will house the wash system and our 20 gallon salad spinner.  And last but not least, we are constantly trying to keep up with our ever so favorite thing called weeds.  It seems like you get somewhat caught up and you turn around and there they are again.  I guess that is just part of the life of a vegetable farmer.

We have our first tomato set fruit in our tunnel!  We are so excited to see progress and knowing that in a few weeks time the tunnel with be full of new fruit!

We are currently taking loose leaf lettuce, spinach, kale, radish, green onion, and head lettuce to the markets.  Also, you can check out the product availability list and see what we have ready!  Please visit us at the markets and get your fresh, local grown vegetables.

We hope you all of a wonderful and Blessed week!

So far this spring has been pretty good.  Not to much to complain about around the farm.  Farmers markets have begun and you can look for us at West Lafayette on Wednesdays from 3:30pm-6:30pm, the Purdue market on Thursday afternoons from 3pm-6pm and Lafayette market on Saturdays from 7:30am-12:30pm.  Currently we have loose leaf lettuce, spinach, head lettuce, and romaine lettuce.

We now have all of our tomatoes planted inside the tunnel and out in the field.   Our tomatoes in the tunnel are now blooming.  We have also planted squash, cantaloupe, beans, peas, etc.  We have broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, carrots, radishes, onions, cabbage, kohlrabi, etc. in the ground.  It is quite a site to go out to the field and see the different color variations across the land.  Anytime you would like to make a visit to the farm, please feel free to contact us and we would be happy to show you around.

Our hog barn to greenhouse conversion is underway.  There is plastic on and sealed up.  We are going to use this greenhouse as an experiment greenhouse.  More information is to come!

We had our first farm tour today with Hopes and Promises Preschool Ministry.  The kids came out and was able to see our tunnels, hog barn to greenhouse conversion, plant a flower, and transplant a tomato plant.  They had a lot of fun being on the farm and splashing in the mud puddles along the tour.

Welcome Spring!  It is so nice to finally say it is Spring.  Around the farm it certainly feels like Spring too!

Things that have been happening around the farm:

Neil bought a couple of  planters and he has been customizing them to meet our needs.  He has put in a lot of time a work in getting the planters ready to go when it comes time to plant.

Neil also bought a new tiller.  On Saturday, March 20th, he and his dad tested it out.  It worked very well and will be so nice with it comes time to plant.

Neil got the ground worked and ready to go.  He also was able to test the planter and planted 11 rows of different vegetables.

Another piece of equipment that we have and tested on Saturday was the plastic layer.  So far so good.  There will have to be a few minor adjustments made, but overall it works pretty good!

We have the pepper and tomatoes seeded for field production.

We have been starting seeds every week since February 1st.  As you can see in some of the pictures the vegetables are growing quite well.

I am sure this warmer weather has everyone excited and in hopes that spring is almost here.  I know here at the farm it seems as if spring is right around the corner.  We now have around 115 flats of vegetables started.  It is so exciting to watch as each type of vegetable grows at it's own pace.  I have posted some new pictures, as of last week, of the vegetable flats.  Once you see the pictures, you will be in such delight knowing that very soon you will be enjoying the vegetables!  Enjoy the sunshine and what God has laid before us!

The past couple of weeks have been very exciting for us around the farm watching the new 30' x 96' cold frame come together.  Now it is finally complete and ready for plants.  Neil and his dad (Jim) has put in many hours making sure the cold frame is done in time for plants.  Neil also had help from his brother (Brandon) and friend (Brent).  We would like to thank everyone for all of their hard work.  Our smaller starting cold frame is complete as well and ready for seeds.  As of today, February 1, 2010, Neil will be starting seeds.  It won't be long until both of the cold frames are full of vibrant green plants.

Along with all of the excitement, our CSA program is off to a great start.  As many of you know, this is our first year of offering CSAs and we feel very blessed to have people in our community willing to purchase our fresh home grown produce.  Thank you again for all of those who have supported us and our family farm.
